Fall 2025 Space Grant Residency Application Overview:

We are excited that you have been nominated for the Fall 2025 Space Grant Residency by a close member of our community and are looking forward to reviewing your application. This will be a 3-4 month residency, taking place between September-December 2025.

2025 BAX Space Grant recipients will receive:

  • $800 stipend.
  • 75 hours of free rehearsal space (either at 421 5th Ave or 80 Hanson Place) to be used between early September and late December 2025.
  • An informal cohort share of works-in-progress with invited guests and BAX Staff (no/low tech), to take place at the BAX Theater at 421 5th Ave in early-mid December (exact date TBC).
  • 1:1 conversations with Marlène Ramírez-Cancio, as desired, to talk about your projects.
  • For parent artists, free tuition for BAX youth programming during the residency.

Eligibility:

  • Artists exploring work rooted in dance, theater, and interdisciplinary performance.
  • Applicants must live within New York City (one of the 5 boroughs).
  • Applicants must be over the age of 18.
  • Full-time students are not eligible.

Due Date:

Application closes Monday, March 31st at 11:59 PM ET*.

*BAX staff will be available to answer questions until 5:00pm ET on Monday, March 31.

Important Dates for Applicants:

  • March 31, 2025: applications due (rolling submission)
  • April 2025: BAX staff review applications (as applications are submitted)
  • May 2025: Space Grant Residents notified of their application status
  • September 2025: (exact date pending) Space Grant artist welcome and orientation (zoom)
  • Early December 2025: (exact date TBC) Works-in-progress sharing (low-tech)

Space and Studio Details:

BAX Space Grants for performing artists include a stipend, support of a cohort, rehearsal space, mentorship, and an informal studio share.

BAX is currently located at 421 Fifth Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. There are 4 studios ranging in size from 20 by 30 to 27 by 37. More details are available on our website. Please note studios are on the second and third floors with no elevator access. Accessible space and accommodations are available upon request and made in collaboration with the artists.

The BAX Annex is our brand-new, fully accessible studio space located at 80 Hanson Place, Ground Floor, Brooklyn, NY. There is one (1) studio that is 45 by 19. Please note that this space does not have mirrors at this time.

The applications has optional fields for personal and demographic information like age, race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexuality, and disability. BAX “commits to building equity across our programs, policies, budgets, and culture,” including to materially and meaningfully value, affirm, and collaborate with artists and cultural workers from a wide range of lived and embodied experiences. The information provided by applicants when answering these fields helps BAX to be accountable to those commitments.
